There are so many things I shall never forget about Uncle Johnny but, here is a short list:
His enthusiasm for planting orange Tiger Lilies in the yard at the house in Crandon Lakes...the knight in armor at the top of the stairs at the house in Jackson Heights...the certainty that he and his butcher friend would become rich when they perfected the boneless turkey...his LOVE for pasta...his funny, surprising stories...the joke about the parrot in the freezer...his belief that you could make the world a better place one Entenmann's cake at a time...his bright, colorful, never subtle way of dressing...the way he would encourage us when we were children to speak up, say what was on our minds by saying that was the smartest, funniest, most unique thing he ever heard and giving you dollar bills for it, and how he continued that encouragement with the next generation..the way he would laugh and laugh after telling you a joke, even though he told that same joke countless times...his eye test tie...receiving a letter in the mail from him with over-the-top illustrated envelopes...his brashness..his habit of carrying a crumb bun in his pocket; the best part being he would go to a coffee shop, take it out, and order a coffee. His extreme delight when the customer nearby found out the coffee shop doesn't have those crumb buns..his always positive, supportive, cheering, BOMBASTIC belief in everyone he knew..his love for adventure and experience; he would create that every day, just by stepping outside...his compliments at the end of a party. Nobody ever threw a nice party. It was always the most amazing, "you really topped yourself this time" party...his love for all his family; not only his immediate family, but the entire family, even those that came into it as boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, partners, children. Nobody was deprived of his love or attention... his love and devotion to his wife Margie; he always smiled when he looked at her...for piling so many of us cousins into his car when we were little, driving us to Atlantic City, the bridge at Dingman's Ferry, or for Hershey's ice cream. Driving with the top down in the massive Lincoln Continental, he, crooning love songs, many his own, as we curved our way back to the lake house, secure in his care, knowing we would do it all again next summer.
Until next summer Uncle Johnny XXX
