I first met Dan in Higgins Hall at Cortland College as a freshman in 1993. Moving in, I knew literally no one, and Dan was the friendliest, most welcoming, most genuine new friend anyone could ever find. He was an exceptional friend to all, always filled with kindness, positivity and good cheer. He was unquestionably as good as it gets as a person and friend and our world is a massively lesser place for his loss. I wish deep and heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends who are certainly mourning this tremendous loss. Much love to all of you, and you are in my thoughts. These last few days have brought back a flood of memories of our time at Cortland, certainly too many to list, but I'll never forget so many of them from going to my first Dead show at the Nassau Colliesm with Dan where we stayed at his house, to epic Sega hockey battles between the Islanders and Bruins in our room, to Block Parties, his legendary 21st birthday, Murphy's, darts league, St. Paddy's days, parties at Woodruff & Lincoln, road trips to Buckell to see the Zen Tricksters, roadtrips to Oneonta to visit his sister Caitlin, Broomball league, Yankee games, Beer Die, the Bawdy Barn, Patino's Paraphanlia intermural soccer, the Sweathogs, and so, so many small moments of kinship and kindness. Anyone who knew Dan surely knows of the what an absolutely amazing, giving soul he was and how rare it is to have someone like this be a part of your life. I feel so lucky that I had the times I had with him, while--as we all do--wishing I had many more. Closing my eyes, I can still see Dan with a prim-a-grin on his face in absolute bliss grooving to along a Dead tune with an absolute joy not often seen, and that is just one of the images of him I will always remember and hold close to my heart, aspiring myself to find such bliss and pass it on to others as Dan did every day. I can't help but think he is still finding and sharing such joy, kindness and kinship with all those he's crossing paths with now. Fare the well Haggs! "Fare you well, fare you well; I love you more than words can tell. Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul."

We are stunned and heartbroken. Dan was one of the nicest, kindest, most down to earth, good natured, easy going, fair and positive minded people. He was so easy to like and spend time with. Never heard him say a bad thing about anyone. Never heard him complain. Never saw him in a bad mood. All those little things in life that crop up and bother the rest of us never seemed to get to him. We could all use being a little more like Dan, and there is a lot to learn from the way he lived his life. We are grieving for him. We miss him and love him. He was a very special person and I wish there was more time. We will cherish the many wonderful moments we had with him. Our deepest sympathies and all of our love. The De Sena family.

There are so many good memories. A great man and a great friend!!
I’ll never forget the summer of 2019 canoeing up in the Nissaqugue river apple picking, all the nights after volleyball. So glad I got to spend Super Bowl with you. And to understand what a great man he is,, Jan of this year, 3 days after my shoulder surgery he cooks me a steak dinner and has Marissa deliver it to my house that’s the type of guy Dan is, there is no man nicer than Dan ever !!!

There’s so many good memories from growing up together. All the trips and holidays together we shared so many happy times....from ski trips to PA and Shawnee, to the trip to Niagara where the sleeping bag flew off the car, to “left left left right left”, to the ice cracking in the pond ...and countless more. Dan was a good friend in high school and college. I was able to reconnect with him through the scouts.
He was a leader and a uniter with his warm, gregarious manner. He had the rare ability to see the best in people, and in turn make them feel good about themselves. Gone too soon but he impacted many lives. I'm grateful to have known him. RIP
