Good-bye Uncle. I am your sister Audrey's youngest daughter and I'm sorry I never got to meet you. You sound like a wonderful and kind person. I wish I had known you.
Sorry to see that you have gone. Rest in everlasting peace. Sending love to your family.

To most people Hank Zuercher was known as a hero and a legend through his time served in the fire department and army. He was known for his heroic actions and humble attitude. But to us he was just grandpa. He was a dad, a husband, and a great-grandfather. And he was the best at each of those roles. He was the man who gave us ice cream for breakfast, told us endless stories, brought us sailing, cheated us in cards, gave us the love of the ocean, came to all of our games, read to us, and had us using power tools by the time we could walk.
Grandpa was our lighthouse. His light guided all of us throughout our lives. Whenever we felt lost at sea, we could count on grandpa to show us the way back to shore. And in his passing I have wondered what we will all do without our lighthouse. But I think that all this time he has just been preparing us to be our own lighthouses, and to be a lighthouse for each other. Our entire lives he has prepared us all for this moment. He has taught us all to be brave, humble, tough, and resilient. He was a man who led by example. Because of him, we all know strength.
I know how lucky I am because although I have lost my grandpa, a day will not go by where I don’t see a piece of him in my cousins, my siblings, and my aunts. His memory and legacy will continue forever. He gave us all something so special to hold on to. As long as we are all here as we are, so is he.
Thank you to all of those who kept him in your thoughts and prayers and to those who gave him the honorable send away he deserved. Good night and good luck.

"The Big Z", "The Swiss Knight", Battalion Chief, Korean War Army Veteran.
An extraordinary fireman in a class by himself. As a fireman in Ladder 108 and Rescue 2, his six foot frame carried 245 pounds of granite muscle.
When he was a Lieutenant in Squad 3 and I was a fireman in Engine 230, the two of us, having been gymnasts, would walk on our hands on the apparatus floor. He was gifted with the strength and instincts that made him a great fireman. He was an inspiration to the rest of us and bigger than life as he lived it. One of a kind, the Hero among Heroes. We will all miss him in the world.
My sincerest condolences to his whole family.
George Kreuscher,
Engine 230, Ladder 102, Rescue 1

Lt. Zuercher was one of my first bosses in Squad 3. You were a great firefighter and easy spoken leader. I remember you for your cement boat and boat engine that blew smoke rings. Were one of the really great smoke eaters, tough as nails and with a great personality. Rest in Peace. You were a great leader of men. Jim Murray

Chief, It was an honor to work for and with you on Snyder Island. As been previously mentioned the career skills you taught me were only exceeded by the humble example of leadership you showed us. Your friendship will always be cherished.

Capt. Thanks for all you taught me when you were the Captain of 108 Truck on Union Ave. I was a young Fireman at that time and the vast knowledge that you had, that you passed on to me was very much appreciated and made me a better Fireman for it. Rest in Peace, you well deserve it. Stephen Ternlund
