Dorothy enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp in 1944 and was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant until the end of the war before returning to civilian life in 1945.
Dorothy returned to Mary Immaculate and it was there she met her beloved husband Jerry “on the floor” of the hospital. At the same time Jerry completed his internship and residency at Mary Immaculate following his discharge from the Army and tour in the Philippines in 1946.
Dorothy and Jerry married in 1947 and later that year they moved to Monrovia, Liberia on the Firestone Rubber Plantation; Jerry was a surgeon there. Their two eldest children Jo Ellen and Jerry were both born in Liberia.
After 2 1/2 years in Africa the family returned to Long Island, NY in 1950. There they settled into the suburbs of Westbury, Wantagh, and N. Bellmore; and it was there they raised their 5 children.
In the late 80s Dorothy was President of the Wantagh chapter of the Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary. Dorothy moved to Orlando, FL in 1989 before returning to Yorktown Heights, NY in 1996 to live for over 25 years. Dorothy held the office of secretary-treasurer of her condo association for a number of years.
Dorothy has had a long and wonderful life and will be sorely missed; however we - her family and friends - hold many fond memories of life with her; she was a wonderful and loving friend and mom; she was a proud and private person and captain of her ship until the very very end…she was also a mean Scrabble player in her earlier years!
