Barbara Ann Bono of Point Lookout, New York passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 25th, 2022. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, John “Johnny” Bono, her beloved daughters Linda MacDonald (John) and Gina Jenkins (Scott Adams), her adoring granddaughters, Christina Barbara Crocitto (Brian) Elizabeth Ann Jenkins and Caroline Barbara Jenkins and her cherished great granddaughters, Lilliana Linda Crocitto and Madeline Barbara Crocitto. Barbara was born on September 9th, 1942 at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center, NY. She grew up in New Hyde Park with her family. Barbara was set up with Johnny on a blind date when she was 16. And as they say, the rest is history! They married on November 16, 1963 and had their first daughter, Linda, the following August. Three years later they welcomed their daughter Gina. They bought their first home in Floral Park on Oak Street in 1967. There are many great memories from that home shared with neighbors, parents, siblings and cousins that all lived close by. Even though Barbara was Irish and German, she enjoyed all the Sunday dinners and gatherings with Johnny’s large extended Italian family.

In 1982, they moved to Long Beach on the water where they enjoyed power boating and then eventually sailing. It was that same year that Barbara got sober and she recently celebrated 40 years as “a friend of Bill.” Barbara helped countless others in their sobriety journey, sponsoring many of the friends she met in the rooms as well as taking on a commitment to do a meeting at the local jail for almost 10 years. In June of 1984, Barbara became a Grandmother for the first time to “her sunshine” Christina Barbara. This is a roll she cherished and enjoyed every single day. Her granddaughters Elizabeth and Caroline joined this fun crew of Barbara’s adored granddaughters in 1995 & 1999. John and Barbara moved to the Hamlet on the “North Shore” in 1994. Barbara loved her home there and the beautiful surrounding area. Barbara’s favorite color was purple and you’d often find her wearing it, driving it or painting a wall in her home purple. You could never have too much purple as far as she was concerned.

Every weekend in the summer for the past twenty-five years, you could always find Barbara sailing with her sweetheart Johnny and their many friends from the Point Lookout Yacht Club. Barbara was also known around Point Lookout for driving her golf cart disguised as a cat and yes, it too was purple! She loved to tell the story about how a neighbor once yelled out “Slow down, bitch” as she went flying by in her cart. Barbara also loved her cats, her many many cats! She was a foster for Tender Loving Cats, a role she thoroughly enjoyed. Of the over 40+ cats she fostered, she found homes for every single one except for one. “Squeeky” was her foster winner and the cat that never left Barbara’s side throughout her illness. In 2016, Barbara became a great-grandmother to Lilly and in 2018, Maddy came on the scene. If you thought Barbara was overjoyed at being a grandmother, she was over the moon at her new title of “Great Grandmother a.k.a. Doh-Doh.” The feeling was mutual. After a long fought battle with lung cancer, one in which she never once complained, Barbara died peacefully at home surrounded by everyone that she loved.
