“Speak softly and carry a big stick”. Father Tom may appreciate the historical reference. When I remember him, I hear his gentle voice and his fierce love of hockey. His profound writing and teaching were delivered with the same grace and compassion he embodied. The twinkle in his eye over a glib remark was only eclipsed by his immense love and appreciation for all life, from the beauty of a rose to the warm hugs of a beloved golden retriever. We were blessed to have known him. He will be sorely missed by family and friends. Meredith Canavor

Fr. Shelley taught me European history my sophomore year at Cardinal Spellman HS.
His wit and love of history and teaching helped inspire me to become and educator.
Rest in peace.

I was a student of Fr. Shelley in Cardinal Spellman HS in the early 70's. I fondly remember his kindness and detail-oriented five question quiz on index cards that made you read every word of an assignment.

I took Fr. Shelley's Church History course at Fordham and attended several of his lectures at the Irish Historical Society and Fordham Lincoln Center thereafter. He was a remarkable instructor and lecturer and an extremely kind man. I am very sorry to hear of his loss.
