I only found out just today when a friend explained to me about this. My heart has been shaken for the rest of the day.
I took Stony Brook's very few courses that pertain to power systems, which were both taught by Professor Driscoll. He was a major inspiration to not only me but to everyone who took his classes. And undoubtedly an inspiration to many who took him as a professor or who even worked with him throughout his many years of service in the university. One of the kindest and most passionate professors in the department. Professor Driscoll, you will be missed by so many. Sending many thoughts and prayers to his wife Janice and his kids.

Tim was one of the gentlest and kindest colleagues I have ever met. He would always have something meaningful to say and share, and he would do it in a most gracious way. He was loved and appreciated by all his students. They were easily recognizing the quality of his courses and his excellence as an instructor. Tim will be very much missed by all of us in ECE at Stony Brook.

We were shocked to hear of Tim’s sudden passing, as he had battled hard to overcome his recent illness and we were confident of his return to teaching in the Spring semester. It reminds us that life can change so suddenly for the family and friends left behind. Our sincerest condolences to Janice, Timmy, his family and friends.
Seems like I have known Tim forever. It started with our casual meetings when he came to teach his evening classes at SBU. As he walked past my office, we would engage in some casual conversation. He was gentle, soft spoken and an extremely caring person and it was my blessing to have shared his friendship for over 30 years. I will miss our casual conversations.
May his soul be united, in heaven, with his children and parents who departed before him.

It seems I lost my message for the third time. We grew up in So. Ozone park with Timmy and his friends. My husband, Tommy Landers and I ( Maureen Cairy) and my sister, Carol Ann as well as many other friends remember Timmy Driscoll as being a real gentleman. He was quiet and yet a terrific person to talk to. I remember his sisters and his parents who came from Ireland as did my parents. A wonderful family. Today, I sincerely want to express our sympathy to The Driscoll family on their loss of a terrific guy.

I have known Tim for more than 30 years as colleagues in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Stony Brook University. In fact, Tim has taught in our department for 45 years. I still remember the first day I joined the department and met Tim. Throughout these years, Tim has always been a professor dedicated to his students and kind to his colleagues. In 2020, when the pandemic hit, all of us switched to online teaching instantly. Tim was very enthusiastic and embraced the new technology and the new mode of teaching. He was the first to experiment with the “breakout room” feature of Zoom teaching and shared his experience in a department meeting. His enthusiasm certainly inspired many of us to adopt the feature which facilitates small group discussion in an online and remote teaching environment. Everytime we saw each other in the corridor, Tim and I would exchange stories about yoga and Tai Chi. For me, Tim always carries with him a sense of peace and harmony. We lost a great colleague and a friend, and the students lost a teacher and a mentor. We’ll miss him enormously.

I first met Tim around 1974 when I was assigned to be his clerk at the Rockaway Beach Substation as part of LILCO's storm restoration process. And for the next 21 years I had the pleasure of, not only knowing him, but of playing softball and basketball with him and working under him as he headed up the EMF Task Force. To me, Tim was an engineer's engineer and also a leader for his associates. I found him to be warm, a communicator, supportive, a deep thinker, having a good attitude, and willing to listen to different viewpoints. I learned a lot from him and was better off knowing him! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family! Rest in peace, old friend!

“A sweet and gentle man,” our daughter described Tim. We first really got to know Tim and Janice when they and we joined the St. Raphael RCIA team in the late 1980s. They would open weekly sessions with the most beautiful and peaceful meditations that would spark the spirituality of those in the group preparing to become Catholics. From those years, as Tim became one of my closest friends, we came to know his kindness, thoughtfulness, concern for others and, for all his intellectual brilliance, his humility. (He was brave, too, willing to stand alone in front of the congregation at Mass as the leader of song.) Arlene and I will miss his “you-did-a-great-job” calls. I will miss our “male-bonding” lunches. The world will miss this man who, I believe, was about as near-perfect a human being as ever walked this earth. But we believe he's happily hugging his children while the angels sing his praises. Thank you, Tim Driscoll, sweet and gentle man. – John and Arlene Vosilla
