Obituary

John Croke of Huntington NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on January 20, 2025. Beloved husband of Catherine (Burke). Loving father of Jennifer (Kevin O’Connor), Kevin (Jean Arkedis) and Mary Eileen (John Domingos). Loving grandfather of Maeve, Brendan and Cara O’Connor, Aidan, Elizabeth and Jack Croke, and Frances and Arlo Domingos. Beloved brother of Mary Kirwan (Martin), Breda Brogden (Paul), and Richard Croke (deceased). Johnie was born in Moyglass, County Tipperary, Ireland. He emigrated from Ireland, first to Liverpool, England, and then to New York in 1975. There he married Catherine, and started a landscaping company, Irish Green Lawns, in 1977. Johnie’s upbringing was modest (electricity did not arrive in his area until 1961), but once in New York, he built a successful business. He took great pride in his work and his many warm relationships with customers and employees.

But by far his greatest joy was his family, especially Catherine, his children and their families, and his extended family in the US, Ireland and England. In his later years he took great pride in his eight grandchildren, making up jokes and games with them, telling them stories and regularly sneaking them ice cream and donuts. He loved music, stories, and social gatherings. He was a great talker and made friends wherever he went. Johnie was well-loved and will be dearly missed by so many. Johnie’s family is deeply grateful to the caring staff of the Huntington Hospital Intensive Care Unit for the comfort they provided to Johnie and his family. Visiting Hours in the Charles O’Shea Funeral Home, 603 Wantagh Ave, Wantagh NY Friday 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass in St. Hugh of Lincoln Church, Huntington Station, NY, on Saturday morning, at 930 am. Relatives and friends are warmly invited.
