Condolences and love to this wonderful family. It is one of the honors of my life to have had the opportunity to be in the presence and learn from such a spirited professional, so generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise. Rest in peace Mr. Mahon.

To Carol, Eileen, Teresa, Pat, Barbara, Beth, Jim, Larry, Ken, Stephen, Brian, spouses and families,
We were shocked to hear of your Dad's passing so soon after his beloved Betty. No doubt you were shocked too. We sympathise with you at this time of great sadness. You are very much in our thoughts these days as you bid farewell to your Dad. Despite this sadness there is an enormous legacy to celebrate when we think of your Dad's long and very full life.
We feel his loss too because knowing him has greatly enriched our lives for many years. He made each and everyone of us feel important and cherished. He had a genuine interest in all his relatives and friends. His pride in all of you shone through every time we met him or chatted with him on the phone.
Your Dad was a very proud American but he never forgot his roots in Galway and Leitrim. We are happy that he has passed on this interest in his heritage and ancestry to you, his children and grandchildren. We have enjoyed many Mahon visitors to Ireland over the years and we look forward to may more in the future.
No doubt we will remember your Dad and indeed your Mum whenever we gather.
What we said of your Mum is equally true of your Dad - we shall not see his likes again or as we say in Gaelic - Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
Heartfelt sympathy from Frank, Mary, Susan, Michael, Finn and Eleanor in Naas, Ireland

Our deepest sympathy to all our lovely cousins, John & Betty's wonderful family & extended families on the passing of your Hero our Hero that we are so proud to call family.
John & Betty ignited their Irish roots when they made their visit to his Leitrim roots when his wonderful family sent them here for their 25th Wedding Anniversary. I was very young to appreciate how we were related and still with Granny explaining that John was her sister's Son whom she hadn't seen from she immigrated. Granny John's Aunt lived with us at that time.
The excitement about John & Betty's " the Yankees " coming was that all hands on deck to clean the house for this, was that of a visit of the Parish Priest to have a "Station" in the house. Sunday best clothes came out and warned not to dirty them before the arrival. Oh the arrival was ecstatic, emotional for Granny as her Nephew the Yankee arrived with his beautiful wife Betty. We remembered how interested in us they were and realising afterwards the had 11 children of their own that 4 of us were a doodle to gracious Betty, however as John said in his interview we hated to see them leave and his goodbyes to Granny I remember was emotional but invitation with open arms for us to visit was welcomed.
Years later 1977/78 we heard a message of John's son Ken the Yankee was coming to Ireland.
I was now in the big City of Dublin. Ken went to visit Mam n Dad and my Uncle's at home before I took care of him in Dublin !!!! with no phone access in Leitrim, Auntie Margaret (Cissy) arranged for Ken to meet with me and stayed at our Apartment/Flat. The rest is history and beginning of our bonding with our Mahon Cousins.....Ken started & paved the way for Larry's voyage.
John & Betty proudly had encouraged them to come to Ireland.
We / I am so forever grateful to John to have made this happen and forever grateful to be honoured to have celebrated the 4th of July 2019 with John & Betty at Ken & Mary Beth's home with the beautiful Mahon family.
A memory cherished and will never be forgotten and thanks one and all for making this happen. John was deeply proud of that day and to see our daughter Grainne enjoy the next generation friendship rooted.
Slán, John until we meet again.
Thanks for being YOU xx

Uncle John was a person who gave freely of his immense talents. These talents were supported by his outstanding qualities as a person. His willingness to assist would often place him at the front of any pack, in the leadership role, where he would find a suitable place for everyone to feel welcome. His shoes will never be filled but he will live on in our memories as a guide, reminding us to be our very best.
Who takes 11 children on a cross country voyage for six weeks? Who makes it an adventure that everyone cherishes for a life time? Uncle John and Aunt Betty
Who, with his brother Tom searches for a “camp” in upstate New York to spend the summers as a family… in the 1960’s!?! Uncle John visited a number of properties before finding the perfect place, Paradox Lake. It was a closed camp with a selling price of $3,000. We have many fond memories at the lakeside, camp fires, going to the dump and ice cream in Schroon Lake. Mr. Mooth was also a magical figure who added to the mystique of the setting.
Who leads when everyone else is too busy? Uncle John and Aunt Betty - their New Year’s Day parties were always a staple for family, friends, and neighbors. For Uncle John being busy was just getting started.
What attorney puts a zip line in his yard where part of the fun was crashing into the tree? Uncle John, if it was going to be fun it was going to be an exciting activity.
He kept us connected with our relatives in Ireland and the Mahon Family reunions at Eisenhauer Park were another place where generations of family members stayed connected and enjoyed games and activities.
With his passing we will be reviewing our “bucket lists, hoping we accomplish half of what Uncle John and Aunt Betty completed.
We will miss you Uncle John, you were a very special person! Thank you for having such a meaningful impact on our lives!

Shortly after my daughter Tracie began her relationship with Brian Mahon, we had them for dinner. During the conversation, as we were sharing about family life, Brian told us about a 6 week cross country car trip that he took with his entire family when he was in second grade. I asked Brian what he remembered about that vacation, and he replied that it was absolutely GREAT….a fun time!
I think at that moment, I knew that John and Betty Mahon were a special couple. Any father and mother who could take a family of 13 on a 6 week road trip….and include a second family as well…. and have an 8 year old remember it as a fun adventure, have to be special people. My time with them over the ensuing years, as well as with many other family members, only reinforced and enhanced that view. Their integrity, character and commitment to each other and their family have left a beautiful legacy, a legacy I see reflected by the honor and love the family has bestowed on their parents.
John Mahon, I salute you for a life well lived. You have given your family a rich inheritance.
